Former Deputy Defense Minister of Armenia, Artak Zakaryan, has stated that the South Caucasus is entering a new stage of turbulence. He expressed concerns about the readiness of the current Armenian authorities, led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, to confront these challenges.
Zakaryan highlighted the current global situation, particularly the renewed maritime blockade of Iran by the U.S. Armed Forces, which has led to rising oil prices. He pointed out that Iran has its own plans for resistance and actions to protect its interests, warning that countries cooperating with the U.S. against Iran are now considered legitimate targets.
He also discussed the situation in Ukraine, noting that a coalition of 25 countries is discussing support for Ukraine against Russia, which has prompted a strong response from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zakaryan emphasized that in light of the new regional tensions, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has adopted a more ambitious and aggressive stance, indicating a lack of interest in a peace agreement with Armenia. He questioned whether the current Armenian leadership has any understanding of how to counter the expected turbulence.
Experts believe that the Azerbaijani authorities are not inclined to sign a peace treaty with Armenia and will continue to impose new preconditions for normalization of relations, which could further destabilize the region.
