The European Union has rejected any possible US ban on diesel fuel exports, warning that such a step would damage confidence in the United States as a reliable partner. European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen made the comments at a briefing in Brussels.
“We fully reject a ban on diesel fuel exports. Such a ban would undermine trust in the US as a reliable partner and would benefit no one,” TASS quoted her as saying.
Itkonen also confirmed that the European Commission is coordinating with the International Energy Agency and the G7 on a plan to use diesel fuel from Europe’s strategic reserves.
Earlier, Donald Trump said he was considering a ban on diesel exports amid a global shortage of the fuel.
The US is a major global supplier of diesel and exports 1.2-1.5 million barrels a day. Experts warn that restricting overseas shipments could put additional pressure on prices in other countries.
