Problems in Armenia’s cement market have had a negative impact on construction volumes, Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan said in comments to reporters.
According to Papoyan, when neighboring countries face difficulties in cement production and supply, this naturally pushes prices higher. He said the increase in prices has in turn weighed on construction activity.
The minister said the authorities have taken several steps to ease the situation. In particular, “Ararat Cement” is now producing more cement than it did last year.
Papoyan also said alternative sources of cement supply have been secured, and the existing duty has been removed. As a result, the cost of imported cement has declined.
He added that imported cement volumes have already increased significantly, which, in his view, should help resolve the market’s current problems.
