The Baltic States of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia have urged the European Union to expedite the process of banning Russian oil imports, according to the Financial Times citing its sources:
This issue was discussed at a meeting of energy ministers from EU member states held on June 26.
European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jorgensen, did not comment on the Baltic states' statement during the meeting, but noted that the current situation in the Middle East could help avoid a shortage of aviation fuel in Europe.
He also emphasized that stabilizing the oil market could take several months.
The Financial Times recalls that last year, EU countries agreed that the European Commission should consider the issue of banning Russian oil imports, but negotiations were suspended following the start of military actions by the US and Israel.
The Baltic states have called for a return to discussions on this matter after the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding that aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the parties have accused each other of violating the ceasefire.
