Chinese sportswear and footwear maker Anta has become the largest shareholder in Germany’s Puma SE after acquiring a 29.06% stake in the company, according to an Anta press release.

The company said it completed the purchase of the Puma shareholding from investment firm Artemis SAS. The transaction was valued at 1.51 billion euros.

Anta said all required regulatory approvals had been obtained and the standard closing conditions for the deal had been fulfilled. Following completion, the Chinese group officially became Puma’s largest shareholder.

At the same time, Anta said it respects Puma’s sporting heritage, brand identity and corporate culture, as well as the company’s independent governance and autonomy.

Anta’s history dates back to the early 1990s, when it started as a small shoe manufacturer in China’s eastern Fujian province. Over the years, it has grown into one of China’s largest sportswear and footwear producers and an official partner of the Olympic team of the People’s Republic of China.
