The leader of the "Reformists" party, Vaan Babayan, stated on his Facebook page that Armenia can remain in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) while also becoming a participant in the European Economic Area (EEA). He explained that in the current difficult conditions of international turbulence, Armenia could offer a new model of interaction to both the European Union (EU) and Russia, which would provide the country with a unique opportunity to strengthen its positions in the region.
Babayan cited Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein as examples of countries that are part of the EEA without being EU members but still have access to the EU's single market. He also mentioned Switzerland, which, while not an EU member or EEA participant, has over 100 bilateral agreements with the EU regulating trade and other areas of cooperation.
"What prevents Armenia from maintaining access to the EAEU market while simultaneously moving towards the European market?" Babayan asked.
It is noteworthy that on May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that Armenia should quickly decide on its membership in the EU and EAEU.
