Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time since the June parliamentary elections.
According to official Yerevan, the parties exchanged views on the agenda of Armenian-Russian relations, particularly on issues arising in bilateral economic relations.
Pashinyan emphasized that restrictions on the export of Armenian-origin goods to the Russian market contradict the legal framework of Armenia-Russia relations and the regulations of the Eurasian Economic Union, and requested measures to address these issues.
According to the Kremlin, during the phone call initiated by Pashinyan, Putin reaffirmed the joint statement made on May 29 in Astana with the leaders of three EAEU member states regarding Armenia's actions towards joining the European Union.
Putin specifically highlighted the need to conduct a nationwide referendum in Armenia as soon as possible regarding joining the EU or remaining in the EAEU.
According to the Armenian government, Pashinyan stated that holding a referendum is practically possible only after Armenia officially applies for EU membership and makes the topic substantive.
Pashinyan emphasized the Armenian Government's readiness to resolve the mentioned issues through open, partnership, and friendly dialogue.
“The conversation was about the recent statement made by the leaders of the EAEU countries regarding Armenia. The necessity of conducting a referendum in Armenia as soon as possible was emphasized to determine which direction Armenia wants to take,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov to reporters.
As of now, Moscow has not congratulated Pashinyan or the ruling party on their electoral victory.
