Pashinian Ally To Head Armenian Parliament Panel After Drunken Scandal

Vilen Gabrielian appointed as head of the defense and national security committee

Vilen Gabrielian, a parliament deputy who resigned 16 months ago due to a drunken scandal, is set to head the defense and national security committee of Armenia's newly elected National Assembly.

Gabrielian is among 12 pro-government lawmakers designated by the ruling Civil Contract party's governing board, led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian, as chairpersons of various parliamentary committees.

He is almost certain to be elected as head of the committee during the new parliament's inaugural session scheduled for Sunday.

Gabrielian resigned his parliament seat in April 2025 after appearing drunk in public, swearing at journalists during a local election in Gyumri.

While other lawmakers affiliated with Pashinian's party disapproved of his behavior, they stated that Gabrielian deserves respect for resigning from parliament.
