Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan did not specify any deadlines for a referendum on Armenia's accession to the European Union during a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was reported to journalists by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president.
"No, specific deadlines were not mentioned," said the Kremlin representative in response to a question about whether Pashinyan indicated when the referendum might take place.
"However, the necessity of conducting such a referendum promptly was emphasized. This is very important," Peskov continued.
It should be noted that yesterday it became known that a phone conversation took place between the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Russia. According to a statement released by the Armenian side, the interlocutors exchanged views on the agenda of Armenian-Russian relations, particularly regarding issues that have arisen in bilateral economic relations.
"Prime Minister Pashinyan emphasized that restrictions on the export of Armenian-origin goods to the Russian market contradict the legal framework of Armenia-Russia relations and the regulations of the Eurasian Economic Union, and requested measures to address these issues. Regarding the issue of holding a referendum in Armenia on joining the European Union, as mentioned in the joint statement of the leaders of the four EAEU member countries dated May 29 of this year, Prime Minister Pashinyan noted that conducting a referendum is practically possible only after Armenia officially applies to the European Union for membership and after making the topic substantive," the Armenian government statement said.
Earlier today, Putin also had a phone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, during which the constructive nature of relations between the two countries was emphasized. According to the Kremlin press service, the parties also discussed the activation of dialogue between the governments and relevant bodies of the two countries.
