Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta warn against 'premature restrictions' of open-weight models

25 tech companies urge to avoid restrictions

A group of 25 tech companies, including Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta, released a letter urging policymakers to avoid "premature restrictions" on open-weight artificial intelligence models.

Open-weight models are available for users to download, modify, and run on their own infrastructure. These models have been the subject of fierce debate within the tech sector in recent weeks.

Chinese open-weight models, such as Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, are gaining traction and competing against leading offerings from American companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the government could impose restrictions on Chinese companies, but tech companies warn that such actions could stifle competition and innovation.

The letter emphasizes that open-weight models strengthen competition and ensure that the benefits of the technology are widely shared.
