Molten Salt Reactors Just Cleared A Major U.S. Regulatory Hurdle

The U.S. Department of Energy approved a safety design agreement for a molten salt reactor

The U.S. Department of Energy has made a historic first by granting a Nuclear Safety Design Agreement for a molten salt reactor developed by Abilene Christian University in Texas.

Molten salt reactors (MSRs) use molten salt as both fuel and coolant, reducing water use and waste compared to standard reactors.

This technology could address many of the issues associated with traditional nuclear energy, including safety and economics.

MSRs are also resource-efficient, enhancing the security and reliability of these models.

These developments come against the backdrop of a major push for nuclear energy innovation from the U.S. government.
