Former OPEC Secretary General and former Ecuadorian Minister of Energy Rene Ortiz has died at the age of 84. This was reported by the organization's press service.
"His legacy will continue to inspire future generations in the field of energy worldwide," the OPEC statement said.
Ortiz served as OPEC Secretary General from 1979 to 1981 and represented Ecuador in the organization's Economic Commission from 1976 to 1978. He also led the Ecuadorian Ministry of Energy twice, in the late 1990s and in 2020-2021.
