Logistics giants are racing to keep up with healthcare boom

UPS, FedEx, and DHL are investing in the healthcare sector

UPS, FedEx, and other logistics companies are investing in the healthcare boom as cold chain and temperature-controlled storage become increasingly important.

These companies are investing millions of dollars and strengthening dozens of facilities to meet the evolving needs of shipping pharmaceuticals.

The explosive growth of medications like GLP-1 weight loss drugs has positioned healthcare as one of the fastest-growing segments for logistics companies.

In June, UPS announced a new $48 million investment in temperature-controlled facilities as it sees a growing demand for critical treatments.

According to a July Gallup poll, 11% of Americans are taking GLP-1 medications for weight loss in 2026, up from just 3% in 2024.

However, if they are not stored and shipped at the correct temperature, they risk losing their efficacy.

The FDA has warned that improper storage during shipping can affect the medicine's quality.

Healthcare logistics growth

UPS Healthcare President John Bolla noted that the company is seeing more healthcare companies looking for partners.

FedEx is also tapping into this trend by launching a dedicated healthcare organization.

C.H. Robinson reported over $1 billion in revenue from healthcare logistics.

DHL is also investing in healthcare logistics.
