There is no conflict between Armenia and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). This was stated by the Russian permanent representative in the organization, Viktor Vasiliev, in an interview with RIA Novosti. He noted that it is incorrect to say that this conflict "allegedly stretches back to the escalation between Yerevan and Baku."
"There is no conflict with Armenia in the CSTO. To say that it has been ongoing since 2021 is also incorrect," Vasiliev stated in response to the relevant question from the agency.
The Russian official emphasized that for many years, including in various international formats, attempts have been made to find compromise solutions for the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. According to him, Russia has proposed "appropriate solutions that are well known to both the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaderships." He added that "the conflict has not been related to the CSTO mandate, and this is known in Yerevan."
It should be noted that Armenia suspended its participation in the CSTO from September 2023. Following the recall of Viktor Biagov, Armenia has not appointed a permanent representative to the organization. As early as 2024, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan clarified that Yerevan does not veto CSTO decisions but is ready to strengthen relations with partners.
In Yerevan's opinion, the suspension of Armenia's participation in the organization is due to the fact that the CSTO did not fulfill its obligations during the period of 2021-2022. This referred to attacks by the Azerbaijani side on the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia during that period.
