Global Trade Volume Increased by 12.5%

Closure of the Hormuz Strait Contributed to Price Increases

In the first half of 2026, global trade volume increased by 12.5%, largely driven by rising prices following the closure of the Hormuz Strait. This is stated in a report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

"In the first half of 2026, the volume of global goods trade reached approximately $13.7 trillion, marking a 12.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025," the report states.

At the same time, it is noted that a significant portion of this growth is attributed not to an increase in trade volumes but to rising prices.

"Disruptions in navigation through the Hormuz Strait, along with concerns about energy supply, have led to increased costs for energy supply, transportation, logistics, and production. Prices for goods in international trade rose by about 3.6% in the first quarter, and in the second quarter, the increase is estimated to be around 5%," UNCTAD reported.

The volume of services trade increased by 10.5%.

Overall, the growth in goods and services trade has added approximately $2 trillion to global trade volume, creating conditions for achieving record annual figures.

Trade volumes increased by 38% in the strategically important mineral resources sector, 25% in semiconductors, 15% in batteries, 14% in information and communication technology (ICT) products, and 11% in electric vehicles.

At the same time, trade in certain types of equipment intended for the chemical industry, ferrous metals, and renewable energy sources has decreased. UNCTAD reported that the growth in fossil fuel trade was primarily driven by rising prices.

East Asia recorded the largest growth, with China and South Korea becoming the main drivers of exports and imports.
