Europe’s nuclear power plants are facing significant challenges as record heat threatens energy security across the continent. France has already announced it will cut output at up to five nuclear plants as river temperatures rise, jeopardizing reactor safety.
Last month’s heat wave knocked out power to 70,000 households on France’s hottest day ever, with temperatures reaching 44°C. Germany and the UK also rely on French nuclear energy exports.
This ongoing heat wave in Europe could lead to energy supply issues as electric grids become overstressed, and ecosystems are also affected.
