The UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated that he is prepared to oppose US President Donald Trump if necessary to protect the nation's interests. He made this remark during his first major interview with the BBC since taking office.
Burnham noted that his first conversation with Trump was positive, but he declined to directly answer whether he trusts the US president. He emphasized that the world is changing rapidly, and governments must respond to evolving events. He highlighted that he will not always share Trump's views and will express different opinions when necessary.
The Prime Minister also expressed concern over Trump's decision to initiate conflict with Iran, stating that it has contributed to rising oil prices, increased inflationary risks, and raised the cost of financing national debt.
Burnham's statements indicate that London may pursue a more independent foreign policy on certain issues, separate from Washington. At the same time, he declined to commit to raising defense spending to 3% of GDP by 2030, emphasizing that the priority is to fully fund the current defense investment program. This issue will be discussed at the end of the year during budget preparations.
The Prime Minister also ruled out the possibility of holding early parliamentary elections, stating that the next elections are expected by 2029, and his government's priority is the implementation of the program and restoring public trust.
