US President Donald Trump has announced the start of a trade investigation against the EU. This was reported by CNBC.
This move is expected to lead to the cancellation of large fines imposed on American tech corporations, as well as the imposition of significant tariffs on countries within the European bloc. In a social media post, Trump stated that the European Union has "once again reverted to its old ways and, as always, targeted major American companies."
The potential sanctions were triggered by a recent $1 billion fine imposed by the EU on Google for allegedly prioritizing its own services in search results. Earlier, European regulators had also imposed financial penalties on major companies such as Apple, Meta, and Amazon.
