Finland has launched the world's largest commercial sand battery, capable of storing 100 MWh of renewable energy as heat. The system charges using cheap surplus wind and solar power and employs AI to optimize charging and discharging, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 70%.
Sand batteries could become a significant long-duration energy storage solution, offering a low-cost alternative to lithium-ion batteries without relying on rare earth materials.
This innovative technology, developed by Polar Night Energy, is located in Pornainen, Southern Finland, and can retain energy for weeks or even months with minimal losses.
