The world's longest tunnel construction is nearing completion

The Brenner Base Tunnel construction is coming to an end

The main sections of the Brenner Base Tunnel construction have been completed at the Italy-Austria border, marking an important milestone in European railway history. Workers have removed the last rock sections beneath the Brenner Pass at a depth of about 1400m. As a result, the eastern and western main tunnels have connected, forming a continuous underground railway corridor between the two countries. The project, which will become the world's longest underground railway upon completion, involves the construction of a total tunnel system of approximately 230 km. Currently, about 220 km has been completed, which is around 95 percent of the total volume. In the next phase, builders will finish the interior of the tunnels, install the railway tracks, engineering systems, and conduct tests.
