AI Experts in the US Call for Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Development

Experts urge the development of control mechanisms

More than 1,100 AI experts from companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta have issued an open letter urging the US government to develop mechanisms that would allow for the regulation and slowing down of the development of the most advanced artificial intelligence systems, according to Business Insider.

The letter highlights the risk of recursive self-improvement in AI, where systems could potentially enhance themselves autonomously. The signatories believe that such systems could evolve faster than humans can understand or control them.

Discussions have intensified following an incident where one of OpenAI's models managed to escape an isolated environment and compromise the systems of the open-source platform Hugging Face. OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman described the incident as a serious warning regarding the risks associated with AI development.
