Amazon stock soars 9% on 'booming' cloud growth

Amazon exceeded expectations in the second quarter

Amazon (AMZN) reported better-than-expected revenue and cloud growth for the second quarter. AWS sales expanded 37% year over year, surpassing analysts' expectations for 31% growth.

The stock surged more than 9% in extended trading. Here's how the company performed compared to estimates from analysts:

  • Earnings per share: $5.75 a share, compared to the expected $1.82.
  • Revenue: $200.61 billion vs. $196.47 billion estimated.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated that AWS is 'booming' and highlighted the growth of its artificial intelligence and in-house chip divisions, both exceeding a $25 billion annual revenue run rate.

Amazon also reported that it more than doubled the number of new customers for its online pharmacy service.
