Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that the closure of the Metsamor NPP will strengthen Armenia's dependence on other countries. She noted that the Metsamor plant produces about 30 percent of Armenia's electricity, which is crucial for the country's energy balance.
“Stable generation of affordable electricity allows Armenia to develop its industry and ensure technological progress,” Zakharova said.
She also addressed international statements regarding the Metsamor NPP, emphasizing that peaceful nuclear energy is an important factor for sovereignty and energy security.
The new Armenian government plans to decide on the technology for constructing a new nuclear power plant by 2027.
In the meantime, the operation of the existing nuclear power plant will be extended until 2036.
