The Armenian government plans to amend the law and consolidate some already merged municipalities again. The corresponding draft was presented in the agenda of the government meeting on August 20 and, after approval, will be discussed in the parliament on an urgent basis.
The government proposes to the parliament to form the Ararat municipality, which will include the communities of Vedi and Ararat along with 32 settlements within them.
"Historical facts indicate that the city of Vedi had the status of a town until the administrative division of 1995. Due to administrative transformations in Soviet Armenia since the 1920s, Vedi became the center of the Vedi district and later the center of the Ararat district," the justification for the decision states.
Vanadzor city will also be merged with the Pambak municipality, which includes 22 settlements. The Pambak municipality was formed 5 years ago.
It is expected that local self-government elections will take place in these consolidated municipalities next year.
