United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby, who was fired from American Airlines 10 years ago, now runs the second-most profitable carrier in the U.S. He told CNBC that he wants to expand United Airlines' footprint at JFK airport and is preparing for how AI will change the industry.
Kirby mentioned that he has floated the idea of mergers with American Airlines and Delta Air Lines but has so far been rebuffed. He also stated that he is not interested in acquiring a smaller carrier.
United Airlines already holds the crown among U.S. airlines for international flights, and Kirby wants to expand the carrier's footprint abroad even more.
Plans for Expansion at JFK
Kirby wants to return to JFK airport, where United Airlines will partner with JetBlue Airways. He noted that the company has several plans in the works to expand their presence at JFK.
This week, United Airlines is set to announce a host of new international routes, including new destinations like Ulaanbaatar and Bilbao.
The Impact of Artificial Intelligence
Kirby also noted that artificial intelligence tools could make traveling easier and improve reliability. He wants delays to be communicated in clear English.
"I firmly believe in no excuses, and so we don't make excuses," he said.
