UNEP ready to assist Armenia in preparing and holding COP17

Armenia's Ministry of Environment collaborates with UNEP

The Deputy Minister of Environment of Armenia, Aram Meymaryan, held a working meeting in Nairobi with representatives of the Ecosystems Department of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The parties discussed the directions of support already provided by UNEP, as well as possible further expert and technical assistance in the preparation and organization of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17).

In particular, they reviewed current support programs, processes planned under Armenia's presidency, issues of youth and private sector engagement, and opportunities for assistance in organizing the thematic event "Mountain and Freshwater Ecosystems Day".

The interlocutors touched upon the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the development and implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), the preparation of national reports, the formation of possible synergies within the Global Environment Facility programs, and prospects for cooperation within the Cali Fund and Kunming Biodiversity Fund.

As a result of the meeting, the parties emphasized the importance of continuing working interaction with UNEP ahead of COP17 and during Armenia's presidency to establish specific support mechanisms and joint initiatives in accordance with the country's priorities.

It is worth noting that COP17 will take place this October in Yerevan.
