Tropical Smoothie Cafe refreshes brand for next phase of expansion

Under Blackstone’s ownership, the chain is preparing for thousands of additional locations.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe has unveiled a new brand identity as the restaurant chain pushes ahead with rapid growth under Blackstone and prepares for further expansion in the U.S. and abroad. CEO Max Wetzel told CNBC the timing reflects the company’s next growth chapter, as management is already thinking about what its “next 3,000 cafes” should look like.

The redesign features brighter colors, a uniform typeface and a new “Palm T” symbol, a frond-shaped icon intended to serve as a shorthand version of the brand, especially on digital platforms. The updated look will appear across the business, from food packaging to the mobile app interface. Wetzel said the color palette was built around ingredients found in the cafes, helping the chain stand apart from quick-service rivals.

The company has been working on the branding overhaul for more than a year, but it is only one part of a broader strategy. In late 2024, Tropical Smoothie combined its national and local media budgets into a single advertising fund. Franchisees contribute 5% of gross sales in marketing fees, and the company says its $80 million marketing budget is now being deployed more effectively. According to Wetzel, national brand awareness rose to 42% from 34% a year earlier.

Tropical Smoothie is also investing in operations. Earlier this year, it began rearranging food and bowl assembly lines to improve speed and accuracy. At the same time, the chain is upgrading what Wetzel called the brand’s “digital front door,” with a refreshed mobile app and website due by year-end under the new unified design, alongside tests of self-ordering kiosks.

Those changes are tied to an effort to deepen repeat business. The loyalty program has grown to 13 million members, up 25% from a year ago, and about one in three orders now comes from a loyalty member, according to the company.

Preparing for the next leg of growth

Over the 12 months ended in June, the chain generated more than $1.6 billion in system sales. By the end of this year, Tropical Smoothie expects to top 1,800 U.S. locations, up 50% from the end of 2022. The company is also planning expansion outside the U.S.

Its ambitions come at a difficult time for the restaurant industry. Consumers have been dining out less often as they try to save money while paying more for gas, groceries and other essentials. That has left restaurant operators competing for a smaller customer pool, often with heavier use of discounts.

Blackstone acquired Tropical Smoothie Cafe in 2024 for a reported $2 billion, including debt. The company was founded in Florida in 1997, and Blackstone became its third private equity owner. Wetzel joined the chain in late 2024 after the sale. He previously served as CEO of CKE Restaurants and chief operating officer of Papa John’s.

In fiscal 2025, Tropical Smoothie reported net income of $115.4 million on revenue of $131.4 million, according to franchise disclosure documents. With only one company-operated location, most of its revenue comes from franchising the brand.

The chain sees its biggest white-space opportunity in the western U.S., particularly in the Midwest and Southwest, though it is also performing well in colder states such as Michigan. Wetzel said the company is not currently working on an IPO, but added that it will evaluate its options “over time.”

Wetzel also pointed to stronger health awareness, broader adoption of GLP-1 drugs and the “Make America Healthy Again” movement as trends supporting sales. He said Tropical Smoothie remains a beverage-led concept: roughly 85% of transactions include a smoothie, though those drinks account for only about half of total sales.
