Why Luxury Brands Are Losing the Chinese Market

Sales of luxury goods in China have sharply declined

The luxury goods sector in China is experiencing a serious crisis, with leading fashion houses reporting a sharp decline in sales. According to Bloomberg, the tightening of tax legislation and capital controls have significantly impacted the financial capabilities of China's wealthiest buyers.

New data shows that in July, the turnover of the 25 largest luxury brands in the world decreased by more than 10%. This figure is worse than the results recorded in June and sharply contrasts with the market activity at the beginning of the year. Industry sources report that Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, and Balenciaga have all recorded double-digit declines in sales. Even Hermes, which previously showed stable growth, has now entered negative territory. The growth rates of Chanel and Prada have also significantly slowed down.

This situation creates additional uncertainty for global corporations regarding the prospects of one of their key sales markets. For many years, China has been the main driving force behind the luxury goods industry, but now competition for the wealthiest customers has intensified. The reason is clear: amid economic instability in the country, the middle class has cut back on its spending.

The decline coincided with a large-scale campaign by Beijing to combat capital outflows and replenish the state budget. Authorities have tightened rules on cross-border stock trading and demanded that citizens pay billions of dollars in taxes on income from offshore accounts and investment income.

These measures have significantly restrained the consumer activity of affluent Chinese citizens and jeopardized the market recovery that had begun less than a year ago due to the surge of interest in artificial intelligence on the stock exchanges.

Data provided by brands indicate that consumer sentiment in China continues to worsen.
