SK Hynix to invest $38.1 billion in new memory chip production facilities

The South Korean company plans to build new production complexes

The South Korean company SK Hynix has announced plans to invest $38.1 billion in the construction of two new memory chip production facilities in response to the growing demand for components intended for artificial intelligence. This was reported by CNBC.

The tech giant will direct funds towards the creation of production complexes in Yongin and Cheongju. The decision comes amid a shortage of supply in the market and high demand from developers of infrastructure solutions, including the American corporation Nvidia.

The rise in memory chip prices has already led to significant increases in the stock prices of major producers such as SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron.

Experts estimate that the global supply will significantly expand by 2028, but product prices are unlikely to decrease until that time, as market demand is growing faster than production capacities.

“In the era of artificial intelligence, mere technological competitiveness is not enough. The ability to deliver necessary volumes at the right time has become the main advantage,” the company stated.

The new investments will be the next phase of the strategic plan presented by the corporation last year. This strategy includes large-scale investments in the development of semiconductor clusters and the expansion of existing production platforms to strengthen competitive positions in the global dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) market.
