Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have signed a joint defense agreement, under which an armed attack against any one of the countries will be considered an attack against all participants of the agreement. This document was signed following the results of a trilateral summit in Mecca and is named the “Mecca Joint Defense Agreement.”
The main objective of the agreement is to strengthen deterrence and collective capabilities, as well as to counter possible aggression. Turkey has the second-largest army in NATO, Saudi Arabia is the richest country in the Persian Gulf, and Pakistan is the only Muslim country with nuclear weapons.
These three countries, considering their ambitious interests and the growing regional counteractions, have come to the necessity of joint defense. The formulations of the agreement are almost NATO-like, but the mechanisms for its implementation remain unclear.
