Saudi Arabia and Turkey are collaborating on 5 GW renewable energy projects, including a first phase of 2 GW solar energy with an investment of around $2 billion. Turkey is rapidly expanding its wind and solar energy production, although coal remains its largest source of electricity generation.
Turkey's Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that the countries have signed an agreement to add a further 3 GW of renewable energy capacity, bringing the total planned capacity to 5 GW.
Saudi Arabia has already invested heavily in Turkey's solar power sector and aims to deepen its energy partnership. Bayraktar emphasized that Turkey has achieved “almost a century's worth of work” under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's leadership.
The Turkish government aims for 47% of its electricity to be produced from renewable energy sources by the end of the decade.
