Romania has restarted a 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant this week to partially offset the generation lost due to the closure of its nuclear power plant.
The low water levels on the Danube forced the shutdown of both reactors at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, which typically generate about 20% of Romania's electricity.
According to Cristian Bu?oi, State Secretary at Romania’s Ministry of Energy, the restart of the Rovinari Group 4 coal-fired unit adds nearly 300 megawatts (MW) to the National Energy System.
The lowest water levels on the Danube in 90 years have also forced the shutdown of Hungary’s only nuclear power plant.
