The American automaker Rivian is actively developing its own Autonomy+ system to compete with Tesla's Full Self-Driving technology and ultimately surpass it. This is reported by CNBC.
Experts note that such technologies are becoming an increasingly important market for automakers and a stable source of revenue. Tesla's system subscription costs $99 per month, while Rivian offers its product for $49.99 per month or $2,500 for the entire lifespan of the electric vehicle.
Currently, Tesla's technology is ahead of its competitor in navigating urban streets and complex navigation conditions, but Rivian plans to implement full point-to-point autonomous driving this year.
“We hope to even surpass Tesla's system thanks to our investments in a more reliable sensor suite,” Rivian stated.
Historically, the leader in developing hands-free highway driving systems was General Motors with its Super Cruise product, but the largest automaker in the U.S. was too slow to expand its capabilities.
Now Tesla relies solely on cameras, which previously led to investigations by regulators due to accidents that occurred in poor visibility conditions. Meanwhile, Rivian uses dozens of cameras and radars and plans to add lidars to enhance road safety.
