Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has convinced Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to negotiate with the USA, according to The New York Times.
Sources from the publication report that Pezeshkian warned that Iran's economy is on the brink of bankruptcy due to the U.S. naval blockade. He also stated that he is ready to resign if there is no progress in negotiations with the USA.
Additionally, the president of the Central Bank announced that there could be a shortage of food and medicine in Iran in the coming weeks.
After this, Khamenei agreed to hold negotiations.
However, he stated that he is fundamentally opposed to concluding an agreement with the USA and will only approve it if the agreement is ratified by Iran's Supreme National Security Council.
It should be noted that on June 17, an agreement was signed between the USA and Iran as a result of negotiations, known as the Islamabad Agreement.
The parties also agreed to continue negotiations with the aim of concluding a final agreement.
