The decision on Armenia's potential membership in the European Union should be made by the Armenians themselves, for which Russia proposes to hold a referendum, said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of Russia, to RIA Novosti.
He also stated that this topic could be touched upon by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during their upcoming meeting in Bishkek.
"The decision about their fate should be made by the Armenians themselves. And we are proposing that they do just that — hold a referendum," Peskov told reporters.
According to him, the issue of holding a referendum in Armenia regarding the country's future relations with the European Union or the Eurasian Economic Union may be discussed at the upcoming meeting between Putin and Pashinyan in Bishkek.
Peskov also emphasized the importance of high-level communication between the leaders of the two countries.
"High-level communication is important every time," said the press secretary of the President of Russia, commenting on the upcoming meeting between Putin and Pashinyan.
