Pashinyan says Russian base not vital necessity for Armenia

Armenian Prime Minister discusses the Russian 102nd military base

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that there was no discussion of the Russian military base stationed in Armenia during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He made these remarks after a government meeting while commenting on the outcome of his talks with Putin.

He noted that the presence of the 102nd military base on Armenian territory is not a vital necessity.

"During this period, we have never raised the issue of the Russian 102nd military base stationed in Armenia. However, it is also not the case that we consider the presence of the 102nd military base on Armenian territory a vital necessity," Pashinyan said.

According to the Prime Minister, if Russia decides to withdraw its military base from Armenia, the Armenian authorities will not object. "If they express a desire to stay, we are also ready to discuss that, but we have never raised this issue during this period," the Prime Minister added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, commenting on his September 1 meeting with Nikol Pashinyan, stated that if Armenia believes it does not need the Russian military base, Russia is ready to withdraw it as early as tomorrow.
