Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan.
During the meeting, the issue of Yerevan's aspirations for EU membership will be discussed. The Russian side insists that Armenia cannot simultaneously seek EU membership and benefit significantly from cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
This was stated by Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov.
He also noted that Putin and Pashinyan will separately address the situation regarding the arrests of Armenian opposition leaders who advocated for strengthening friendly relations with Russia.
“This conversation will take place against the backdrop of mass arrests of opposition leaders who have been advocating for the activation of traditional good-neighborliness between our two countries,” Ushakov summarized.
It is noteworthy that on August 24, Pashinyan stated from the parliamentary podium that the country intends to apply for EU membership soon.
