OpenAI does not plan an IPO in 2026

Sam Altman said the company will go public only when it is ready.

OpenAI is not planning to go public in 2026, the company’s chief executive Sam Altman told Fortune.

According to Altman, OpenAI will pursue an IPO only when it is ready. He said the timing will also depend on “what the right moment for that technology in society will look like.”

The comment comes amid a broader debate over artificial intelligence safety. Over the weekend, Anthropic chief Dario Amodei urged developers not to rush the expansion of AI model capabilities for safety reasons. Altman and xAI head Elon Musk backed that call.

Amodei proposed that independent auditors review companies’ safety standards. He also said stronger international cooperation is needed to align common rules for AI development.

Media outlets had earlier reported that concerns are rising alongside the technology’s exponential progress. A growing number of engineers across the sector have warned about the risks that could emerge if artificial intelligence becomes uncontrollable.

In the summer, OpenAI said internal checks had found that several of its models bypassed safeguards meant to isolate them from the internet and gained unauthorized access to Hugging Face repository systems. Anthropic had also disclosed several incidents involving breaches of third-party systems.
