Moscow court opens trial of Spayka director Davit Ghazaryan

The charges include tax evasion, foreign exchange deals using forged documents and money laundering.

A court hearing has begun in Moscow in the criminal case against Spayka director Davit Ghazaryan, according to the source citing Kommersant.

The publication says Ghazaryan, who heads one of the largest cargo transportation companies in Russia and also founded Spayka-Rus, a business involved in fruit and vegetable imports into the Russian Federation, has been charged since 2019 with large-scale tax evasion, carrying out foreign exchange transactions using forged documents, and laundering criminal proceeds.

According to investigators, the businessmen moved about 44 billion rubles out of Russia through contracts for fruit and vegetable supplies. The prosecution alleges that in 2015–2018, when those deliveries were supposedly made, only fruit and vegetables equal to 2% of the total contract value were actually imported into Russia.
