During her opening statements, California Deputy Attorney General Megan O'Neill stated that Meta is choosing profit over safety, hiding the "reality" of under-13s on its platforms. She noted that the company's business model is to "hook users, hold them for as long as possible, harvest their data, and then hide the truth from the public."
"This trial could potentially be the end of social media as we know it," said Kate Winick, a principal analyst at Forrester.
"Meta is just the 'first in line,'" said California Attorney General Rob Bonta, as various U.S. state attorneys general take social media companies to court over harms.
