Options activity in Meta surged sharply as investors increasingly began treating the company as a fresh consumer artificial intelligence play. According to CNBC, trading volume in Meta options on Monday was about 4.5 times the 30-day average. Data from Cboe LiveVol and SpotGamma showed that nearly $3.9 billion in total premium changed hands.
The flow pointed to a strong preference for call options over puts, with more than twice as many calls likely bought as puts. Seven of the session’s 10 largest trades were classified as either bullish or neutral.
Meta shares jumped 12% on Monday, moving to within about 7% of the stock’s all-time high reached in August 2025. That extended the rally to 21% since the company unveiled details of its Muse personal assistant. Meta also announced plans to develop a subsea cable called Petal to transmit data across the Atlantic Ocean.
The most actively traded contracts on Monday were zero-day-to-expiry options, notably in-the-money calls with strikes ranging from 720 to 745. Further out on the curve, heavy activity was also seen in the 775 and 800 strikes expiring in mid-October.
Brent Kochuba, founder of options analytics platform SpotGamma, said inflows into the options market were “huge.” In his view, the main driver appears to be AI hype surrounding Muse.
Meta’s Muse AI personal agent tool has been available for nearly two weeks, yet it is already topping app store rankings. A previous CNBC report, citing Sensor Tower, said the app logged 730,000 downloads in roughly five days after launching on Sep. 8.
SpotGamma data showed that more than $1.3 billion in call premium traded was likely initiated by call buyers, while about $1.1 billion was tied to selling. That suggests a bullish bias, though part of the flow also reflected upside hedging.
At the same time, the largest trader by dollar size during the session appeared to take a net short position of around $20 million. The strategy involved several spread trades centered on the sale of a one-by-two 710/765-strike call spread expiring Oct. 16, which profits if Meta falls below $740.
