Mexico plans to add roughly 32 GW of generation capacity by 2030, with around 70% of the new capacity coming from renewable sources. Sheinbaum’s government has created more room for private renewable investment while retaining a dominant role for the state-owned CFE. Major solar, battery-storage, and wind projects are moving forward as Mexico targets renewables for at least 38% of electricity generation by 2030.
After a delayed start under the previous government, Mexico is now well on its way to undergoing a green transition. President Claudia Sheinbaum has launched an energy reform that opens Mexico’s energy sector to greater private investment and focuses on expanding the country’s renewable energy sector.
Currently, Mexico has 76 wind farms with an installed capacity of 8,131 MW, and solar power capacity is projected to grow to 37.8 GW by 2035.
