The Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant has high durability and resilience to external impacts, and its closure will lead to increased energy dependence of Armenia on other countries. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commenting on statements regarding the safety of the plant.
“The Armenian NPP has high durability and resilience to external impacts, which is confirmed by the results of numerous studies and stress tests,” Zakharova said in a comment published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
She noted that today the Metsamor NPP is a system-forming element of Armenia's energy balance and provides about 30% of electricity production in the republic.
“Stable generation of affordable electricity has allowed Armenia to develop its industry and ensure technological progress for many years,” the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
According to her, in modern conditions, nuclear energy is one of the factors of the sovereignty and energy security of the state.
“Closing our own NPP will lead to nothing but increasing the state's dependence on other countries in the energy sector,” Zakharova emphasized.
She also reminded that Russian and Armenian specialists are implementing a set of measures to extend the operational life of the Armenian NPP until 2036.
