The Metsamor NPP is a system-forming element of Armenia's energy balance, and its closure would only increase the country's energy dependence on other nations. This was stated by Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, who noted that the Metsamor NPP produces about 30% of the electricity, enabling Armenia to develop its industry.
“In the modern world, the peaceful use of nuclear energy is a factor of sovereignty and energy security,” Zakharova emphasized.
She also mentioned that the false claims about threats from the Metsamor NPP seem to be an attempt to sow discord in Armenian-Russian relations.
