In July, car production in the UK decreased by 11.6% year-on-year, totaling 63,655 vehicles. This is according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT):
In July, 16,278 cars were produced for the domestic market, which is 3.8% more than in the same period last year. Production intended for export fell by 15.9% to 47,377 vehicles:
In the first seven months of the current year, car production in the country decreased by 8.1% to 449,634 vehicles. Of these, 108,035 cars were produced for the domestic market, down 11%, while 341,599 were for export, down 7.1%:
Excluding commercial vehicles (CV), production in July decreased by 10.6% to 61,767 units. Of these, 15,534 were produced for the domestic market, up 9.3%, while 46,233 were intended for export, down 15.8%:
According to SMMT, supplies have decreased in all major markets, particularly in the European Union by 15.2%, the USA by 17.7%, Turkey by 18.5%, China by 36.9%, and Japan by 24.4%:
“The July figures highlight the challenging conditions under which British car manufacturers are currently operating. While the negative figures are partly due to temporary shutdowns and model changes, the situation is exacerbated by declining demand abroad and fierce competition in the global market,” said SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes.
