McDonald’s to direct $8.5 billion to franchisee support by 2036

Through its NEXT program, the company aims to speed up modernization and improve restaurant efficiency.

McDonald’s Corp. said it plans to provide about $8.5 billion in support to its franchise partners by the end of 2036. According to the company’s statement, $5 billion of that amount is expected to be allocated by the end of 2030.

The measures will be implemented through the NEXT program, which was launched in June. The initiative is designed to improve product quality, service standards and restaurant operating efficiency. To do that, the company plans to speed up restaurant modernization, roll out new technologies and introduce operational improvements.

McDonald’s said franchise partners will also receive support related to rent payments. The company expects these steps to lift restaurants’ gross efficiency by 250 basis points.

Based on its projections, that would generate about $100,000 in additional annual cash flow for the average restaurant in the United States and allow investments to be recouped within four years.

The company also forecasts that network expansion next year will add 2.5 percentage points to systemwide sales growth. By 2030, that contribution is expected to decline to 2 percentage points, while general and administrative expenses (G&A) will account for about 1.9% of total systemwide sales.

McDonald’s expects operating profitability to reach 50–56% by 2030. For 2027–2030, core capital expenditures are planned at $3 billion per year, while another $1.5–2 billion annually will be directed to franchise partner support.

In addition, the company intends to increase its share in the chicken and beverages markets by 1.5 percentage points in each segment by 2030, while maintaining its leading position in the beef category.

McDonald’s operates more than 46,000 restaurants in over 100 countries. About 95% of those restaurants are owned and operated by independent local entrepreneurs.

In premarket trading on Wednesday, the company’s shares were up 0.7%. A day earlier, McDonald’s had also raised its quarterly dividend by 3.8%.
