Hassett says private sector should address AI risks

The White House National Economic Council director argued against expanding the government's role in AI regulation.

White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told CNBC that the risks tied to rapidly advancing artificial intelligence can be handled by the private sector and do not require a broader government role.

Speaking on Squawk Box, Hassett said the issues are “completely solvable.” In his view, the private sector is the right place for those solutions to be developed and put into practice.

  • Hassett said AI risks can be addressed without a major expansion of regulation.
  • He argued that the government already has an appropriate role and is closely monitoring the sector.
  • One day earlier, Donald Trump had lashed out at AI industry leaders warning about the dangers of the technology.

Hassett’s comments came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump launched a social media attack on AI industry leaders and others who have raised alarms about the risks of their own emerging technology.

Trump dismissed those concerns as a “hoax.” His AI-friendly administration argues that U.S. dominance over China in the fast-growing industry is essential.

Hassett also said the government already plays a role, but that role should not be expanded, even as more industry officials and members of Congress push for stronger involvement.

He stressed that this does not mean the government is inactive. Instead, authorities are watching developments closely and using law enforcement when necessary to ensure companies act responsibly.

CNBC said the story is developing and may be updated.
