The Caspian Sea Is Now a Critical Military Lifeline for Russia and Iran

The Caspian Sea is a crucial route for military cooperation between Russia and Iran

The Caspian Sea provides Russia and Iran with a direct maritime route largely beyond the reach of Western naval forces. This corridor could help Moscow supply Iran as Tehran seeks to replenish military capabilities depleted by months of fighting.

Ukraine has demonstrated that the route is not completely secure by striking vessels and infrastructure connected to Russia-Iran logistics. The Caspian Sea is emerging as a potentially important logistics corridor in the expanding military relationship between Russia and Iran as they look to move goods beyond the reach of Western naval power.

The corridor opens a route that could allow Moscow and Tehran to exchange large quantities of cargo. NBC News reported that Moscow is already using the Caspian Sea to send military-related supplies to Iran.

Senior US administration officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that Washington is closely watching the broader Russia-Iran military and logistics relationship and monitoring signs that wartime supply arrangements could develop into more durable infrastructure.
