Card on Vacation: How to Pay Abroad and Not Overpay

How to Prepare for Payments Abroad

YEREVAN, August 31. News-Armenia. The "velvet season" is approaching, which means that the bank card remains the main financial companion of travelers. It is convenient for paying for hotels, tickets, taxis, purchases, and dinners at restaurants. However, even a familiar card can bring unpleasant surprises abroad: double conversion, unfavorable exchange rates, hidden ATM fees, transaction blocks, or the risk of fraud.

To ensure that your vacation does not turn into financial stress, it is better to prepare in advance for using your card abroad.

Do not rely on just one card

The main rule of travel is not to rely on just one card. Even if it works perfectly in Armenia, there may be failures abroad: the card may not go through at the terminal, the bank may consider the transaction suspicious, the ATM may "eat" the plastic, or the payment system may not be operational in a specific country or point of sale.

The optimal option is to take at least two cards from different banks, and if possible, from different payment systems. One can be used for current expenses, while the other can be kept separately as a backup.

Check if the card will work in the destination country

Before departure, it is worth checking with your bank whether there are any restrictions on transactions in the destination country. This is especially important if you are flying to less popular tourist countries or planning transit through several countries.

Choose payment in local currency

One of the most common mistakes tourists make is agreeing to pay in the currency of their card if the terminal or ATM offers a choice.

Check the cash withdrawal fee

Even if the card allows you to withdraw cash from an ATM abroad, it does not mean that the transaction will be free. Fees can be charged from multiple sides: your bank, the ATM owner, and the payment system through the conversion rate.

Watch for exchange rates and double conversion

Fees often hide not in a separate line, but in the exchange rate.

Keep an eye on your card during payment

Abroad, as at home, it is important to keep track of where and how the payment is made.

Use notifications and limits

SMS or push notifications about withdrawals are one of the simplest ways to quickly notice a suspicious transaction.

Be cautious with public Wi-Fi

On vacation, you often want to connect to free Wi-Fi at the airport, cafes, or hotels. However, such networks are not always safe.

Do not store photos of your card on your phone

Many people take photos of their card or passport just in case. But if the phone is lost or hacked, such photos can become a gift for fraudsters.

Lost card or suspicious withdrawal

If the card is lost, stolen, or you notice a suspicious or unauthorized transaction, you need to act quickly.

Cash is still needed

Even in countries with developed cashless payments, it is not advisable to completely abandon cash.

Financial checklist before the trip

Before departure, it is worth taking a few simple steps:

  • check the expiration date of the card;
  • clarify fees and limits;
  • enable notifications;
  • take a backup card;
  • save the bank's phone number;
  • install the banking app and ensure it works.

During the trip, the card should be a convenient tool, not a source of risk.

Main points

It is safer to pay with a card abroad if you check the bank's conditions in advance, choose payment in local currency, avoid suspicious ATMs, monitor withdrawals, and do not keep all your money on one card.
