Armenia’s Water Committee and ADB discuss new cooperation tools

The talks focused on preparing and implementing priority water infrastructure projects.

Armenia’s Water Committee has discussed new opportunities to expand cooperation with the Asian Development Bank. According to the committee, the ADB delegation presented recent changes to the bank’s technical assistance policy, available financing instruments and newly introduced support mechanisms.

The discussions covered reimbursable technical assistance and a new “Project Readiness Financing” support instrument approved this summer. The sides reviewed how these tools could be used in the preparation and implementation of priority projects in Armenia’s water sector.

The projects mentioned included the modernization of wastewater treatment plants in the Sevan basin cities of Gavar, Martuni and Vardenis, the development of wastewater collection and disposal systems in nearby rural communities, and the construction of new reservoirs in Getik, Karmirgyukh, Garnahovit and Yeghvard.

Water Committee Chairman Aramazd Galamkaryan said the Asian Development Bank’s flexible approach and broad-based cooperation with the institution make the joint programs strategically important for upgrading Armenia’s water infrastructure.

ADB representatives said the bank’s new instruments can be used at the stages of feasibility studies, detailed design and site assessments, as well as to ensure compliance with environmental and social safeguard requirements. In their view, this will help prepare high-quality programs in line with international standards.
